Well the time had come for us to start our epic roadtrip up to Chicago. The whole point of us driving up was because of our dog, Petey. He’s a pretty big boy and therefore we didn’t want him to fly down below with the hot cargo, how sad!
We took off at 6:05am on Saturday morning in the hopes of making it to Memphis,TN in time for the last tour for Graceland at 4:30. Don’t judge, but I figured we were stopping in Memphis for the night anyway so I might as well go! The first leg of our trip would take us approximately 10 hours, most of it spent getting out of Texas. Petey fell fast asleep for most of Texas while I stayed up and kept Michael company (ok, I napped for an hour, but in my defense his ESPN podcasts are super boring).

Eventually we got to the cusp of Texas which, as many of you know who have ever tried to make this drive, is Texarkana. The name logically stemming from the fact that half of it is in Texas and half of it is in Arkansas. I was desperate for some type of “You are now leaving Texas” sign, and to my dismay there was none. We stopped at a DQ and I asked some friendly people, who you could totally tell were from the Arkansas side of the track, where I might find something to appease my needs. They pointed us in the direction of the post office where they ensured us we could take a ton of pictures. Those hicks were right!

Such tourists! I even made Michael take some shots to his dismay, he humors me what can I say.

Texarkana!
After our little excursion through Texarkana we continued on. It was getting closer to lunchtime so we decided to stop in Little Rock a couple of hours down for a bite to eat. We found a place on our phone app called Dizzy’s. If you’re ever in LR check this place out. The food was really good and pretty fast considering we had to quickly eat b/c Petey kept setting the car alarm off. We got back to the car and walked with Petey around their little downtown area. They had a market with all sorts of booths and trinkets right on the water. Little Rock is definitely a place that not many people think to go to, but it’s a pretty neat little city.
We hopped back in the car and trekked on. Somewhere between Texarkana and Little Rock, we decided to not rush to Memphis for Graceland. There was just so many neat things along the way and rushing would take away from all the fun we could have. Needless to say, we reached Memphis, TN at 5:30, an hour short of Graceland.

Memphis! Home of the blues, birthplace of rock
After some hotel fandangling (it’s a bit difficult to find a hotel that will take dogs and there are zero that take one Petey’s size), we managed to book a room at the Westin right on Beale Street. We gracefully snuck Petey in (wearing his custom UT football jersey so he would blend in) through the empty restaurant, and quickly put him in our room for safe keeping. This was definitely the nicest place he had ever stayed! And then we were off to explore!
Beale Street is essentially a safer and smaller version of Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Cops pat you down and check your ID’s before you can even enter!

Beale Street - Where all the magic happens
We walked on through and grabbed a drink at the famous Silky O’Sullivans. Basically it’s like Pat O’Briens on Bourbon, but I probably wouldn’t tell them that. Just like Pat’s they are famous for their hurricanes and claim they have the best. I had to try one and although it was good, it was not better than good ‘ole Pat’s! What they do have that’s different are goats. Yup, goats. Apparently these little guys are very famous. Check them out on YouTube.
Before fully hitting Beale I needed to get some food into my system. Since this isn’t Michael’s first rodeo driving up to Chicago from Houston, he insisted we go to this BBQ place called Charlie Vergos Rendezvous, where their slogan is “Not since Adam has a rib been this famous”. We lucked out and there wasn’t a huge wait, usually its up to 2 hours or more. We sat and ordered the sausage and cheese plate, I had no idea what I was in for.

This is the sausage and cheese plate and it is A-freaking-mazing with the seasoning. We obviously had to get some to take with us.
It was unbelievable. The main difference between Memphis style BBQ (or southern) and Texas, is that they use a dry rub. I had never had dry rub ribs I liked before, but these were phenomenal. I picked off Michael’s since we all know how I order the brisket sandwiches

I can’t rave about this place enough. It’s a MUST if you are even remotely in the Memphis area.

We walked out, our bellies full, and headed back to Beale Street for some more fun. We were getting pretty tired, the day’s drive wearing on us, but we opted for one more drink before calling it a night.
On our journey back to Beale I found Elvis! Or at least this was as close as I would get this trip anyway.

Elvis Presley - Don't ask me why they are duck feet
We walked down to Wet Willy’s where they have all types of funny named frozen drinks on the wall. Since it was our first time there, the bartender gave us a mix of two that they like to call “Superman”. It’s a mix of “Call a Cab” and “Shock Treatment”. Needless to say we went home after this to get some rest. We had to get up early for another long day of driving!
